A first generation American, business leader, and educator
Stephanie Murphy is a Florida business leader and college instructor who ran for Congress to expand economic and educational opportunities for all. When Stephanie was one year old, she and her family came to America seeking freedom and opportunity, and she is committed to helping others live out the American dream. Stephanie’s family escaped Vietnam’s communist regime by boat and became refugees in Malaysia. Her parents worked as laborers to support the family, and Stephanie and her brother became the first in their family to go to college. After earning her master’s degree, Stephanie served as a national security specialist in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where she received numerous awards for her distinguished service, including the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service; and she has served as a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She lives in Winter Park, Florida with her husband Sean and their two young children, Liem and Maya, and is dedicated to serving her local community. Stephanie has worked as an executive at a business advisory firm, and as an instructor of business and social entrepreneurship at Rollins College.
A champion for education
Stephanie is an experienced business leader who is committed to growing Florida’s economy and creating jobs to help working families get ahead. She is dedicated to promoting women’s entrepreneurship, and volunteers with a local Orlando organization to help women business owners achieve greater success. Stephanie believes that all hardworking women should have a fair shot, and she will fight for policies aimed at ending gender discrimination in pay. “We also need to expand educational opportunities, because education was the single biggest factor changing the course of my life,” she has said. Stephanie became the first woman in her family to go to college with the help of scholarships and Pell grants, and her experience inspired her to give back. As a college instructor, she became involved with Support Our Scholars, a local Florida organization that helps economically disadvantaged young women attend and complete college. Stephanie will be a champion for education in Congress. She is a strong pro-choice advocate, and she will defend women’s access to health care from Republican attacks.
A flipped seat
Stephanie ran in a newly-drawn district that because of a court-ordered redistricting was evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Stephanie ran a strong grassroots campaign, and incumbent Republican Rep. John Mica found himself vulnerable after more than two decades of advancing an extreme agenda in Congress and taking his once-safe Republican district for granted. In 2016, hardworking women and families in this newly-drawn district finally had the chance to be represented by someone who will stand up for them. With the full support of EMILY’s List, including mail pieces sent directly to voters by WOMEN VOTE!, Stephanie flipped this seat to bring new leadership to Washington.
