EMILY’s List Responds to Donald Trump’s Appointments of Sen. Sessions, Lt. Gen. Flynn, and Rep. Pompeo
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of three members of his team: Sen. Jeff Sessions for attorney general, Rep. Mike Pompeo for CIA director, and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn as national security adviser. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, released the following statement:
“Donald Trump is choosing to build his administration with men who have ignored the challenges facing women and families and who have actively pushed policies that are detrimental to the health and well-being of women across the country. Their potential positions of power are terrifying for women.
“In the Senate, not only does Sen. Sessions have a long history of racist, offensive statements toward people of color, he also has been on the wrong side of women at every turn – from defunding Planned Parenthood to voting against both the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.
“In the House, Rep. Mike Pompeo fought to defund Planned Parenthood, institute a national abortion ban, and prevent the passage of critical equal pay legislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act.
“Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn joins their anti-woman fervor and has openly supported overturning Roe v. Wade. Further, his long history of insulting, offensive comments proves that he does not have the temperament for the critical role he would be expected to play on the world stage.
“That these men are going to join Donald Trump in positions of power is simply unacceptable. If Trump wants to continue to surround himself with fellow men who view women in the same light of inequality, rest assured that women across the country will hold him and his administration accountable.”
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $400 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making it one of the most successful political organizations ever. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 700 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color - including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
