EMILYs List Statement on the GOP's AHCA Failure

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today President Donald Trump asked Speaker Paul Ryan to pull the American Health Care Act (AHCA) from the floor of the House of Representatives. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, released the following statement:

“While there are many battles to come against this administration’s dangerous agenda, millions of Americans can today breathe a small sigh of relief. This bill, championed by Paul Ryan and Donald Trump, would have put countless lives at risk, defunded Planned Parenthood, crippled our health care system, and sent our economy into a tailspin – all while benefiting insurance company executives. By showing up to town halls, marching in protests nationwide, and working tirelessly to make their voices heard in opposition to this bill, Americans proved that they will not stand by a White House and a Republican Congress determined to make the rich richer on the backs of hardworking families.”

“But with this administration, our fight is far from over. We know that Donald Trump will continue to drive a dangerous agenda that undermines our constitutional values, economic security, and the rights women have been guaranteed for decades. EMILYs List and our women in Congress will continue to fight back against this administration’s cruel attacks on women, workers, and all Americans – and we will continue our work to send more pro-choice Democratic women to join their ranks.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
