EMILY’s List Statement on US Withdrawal From Climate Agreement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, released the following statement:

“This is a sad day for our country. Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement is a radical move that puts not only the United States, but our entire world in danger. Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing our planet today, and its impact disproportionally affects the women, children, and working families worldwide whose needs have been systematically ignored by this administration. While we shouldn’t be surprised – this is a president who believes that climate change is a hoax invented by the Chinese, after all – we stand with countless Americans who are horrified at the lengths Donald Trump will go to put people everywhere at risk for the benefit of the wealthy few. This is a major threat to our national security. Women will not stop fighting back against this president and his radical decision to push for policies that harm their families, devastate the environment, and alienate us from our international allies.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
