First Latina Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Resistance Leaders Featured at EMILYs List Conference

Washington, D.C. – On May 3rd EMILYs List, a political action committee dedicated to training and electing more pro-choice Democratic women into office, hosted their annual We Are EMILY conference and gala in Washington, D.C. 

The conference brought together the most powerful Democratic women in the nation, such as Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senators Elizabeth Warren, Catherine Cortez Masto, Kamala Harris, and other national and local Latina leaders. The conference featured a discussion with Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is running for governor of New Mexico. If elected, she would be the first Democratic woman of color governor in the country. Rep. Lujan Grisham is one of the candidates EMILYs List has already endorsed in this election cycle. 

At the conference, EMILYs List highlighted up-and-coming women who are on the cusp of becoming national leaders because of their work on the ground advancing progressive issues. Among this year’s nominees are Seattle City Councilmember Lorena González, a former civil rights attorney and a founding member of the National Advisory Committee for the Latino Victory Project, and Teresa Benitez-Thompson, the first Latina majority leader in the Nevada Assembly and former president of the Nevada Empowered Women’s Project.

To create a pipeline for more women  candidates like Lorena and Teresa, EMILYs List is tripling their state and local program to accommodate the over 12,000 women from all 50 states wanting to run for office since Election Day. 
The gala celebration featured Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, and a keynote address from Senator Elizabeth Warren. Crisanta Duran, the 2016 Rising Star Award winner and current Colorado House Speaker, presented the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award to Philadelphia City Councilwoman Helen Gym.

To honor the millions of women across the country leading the charge against Donald Trump and his Republican allies, EMILYs List presented their annual We Are EMILY award to the resistance movement, including the immigrants’ rights movement and the organizers of the Women’s March on Washington. The resistance is spearheaded by millions of women who have organized and stood up for the most vulnerable among us. EMILYs List recognized leaders such as immigration activist Astrid Silva; founder of  Dreamers of Virginia and co-founder of the Dream Project Hareth Andrade; VotoLatino’s President Maria Teresa Kumar; and the executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, Jessica González-Rojas.

Primera senadora latina Catherine Cortez Masto y Líderes Destacadas de la Resistencia en la Conferencia y Gala de EMILYs List

Washington, D.C. – El 3 de mayo EMILY's List, un comité de acción política dedicado a capacitar y elegir más mujeres demócratas a puestos políticos, organizó su conferencia y gala anual We Are EMILY en Washington, D.C.

La conferencia reunió a las mujeres demócratas más poderosas de la nación, como la líder demócrata Nancy Pelosi y las senadoras Elizabeth Warren, Catherine Cortez Masto, Kamala Harris y otras líderes latinas nacionales y locales. La conferencia incluyó una discusión con la congresista Michelle Lujan Grisham, quien se postula para gobernadora de Nuevo México. Si fuera elegida, sería la primera gobernadora demócrata Hispana en el país. La congresista Lujan Grisham es una de los candidatas que EMILYs List ya está respaldado en este ciclo electoral.

En la conferencia, EMILYs List puso de relieve a mujeres que se encuentran en la cúspide de convertirse en líderes nacionales debido a su trabajo avanzando temas progresistas. Entre las nominadas de este año figura la Concejal de la Ciudad de Seattle Lorena González, ex abogada de derechos civiles y miembro fundador del Comité Asesor Nacional del Latino Victory Project. Y Teresa Benítez-Thompson, la primera líder latina en la Asamblea de Nevada y ex presidenta del proyecto Nevada Empowered Women.

Para capacitar a más mujeres candidatas como Lorena y Teresa, EMILY's List está triplicando su programa estatal y local para dar cabida a más de 12,000 mujeres de los 50 estados que quieren postularse para cargos políticos desde las elecciones pasadas.

La celebración de gala contó con la presencia de la senadora Catherine Cortez Masto, y un discurso de apertura de la senadora Elizabeth Warren. Crisanta Duran, ganadora del premio Gabrielle Giffords  Rising Star 2016 y actual presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes de Colorado, presentó el premio Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star 2017 a la concejal de la ciudad de Filadelfia Helen Gym.

Para honrar a millones de mujeres en todo el país que dirigen la resistencia contra el Presidente Donald Trump y sus aliados republicanos, EMILY's List presentó su premio anual We Are EMILY al movimiento de resistencia, incluyendo el movimiento de derechos de los inmigrantes y las organizadoras de la Marcha de Mujeres en Washington. La resistencia está encabezada por millones de mujeres que han organizado y defendido a los más vulnerables entre nosotros.
