Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway Nominated for EMILYs List’s Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced that Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway is a 2017 nominee for their Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.

Named in honor of the dedicated and courageous Gabrielle Giffords, the Rising Star Award celebrates an extraordinary woman serving in state or local office. The award honors a woman who demonstrates the sort of commitment to community, dedication to women and families, and determination and civility that have been the highlights of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ career, in and out of office. Previous Rising Star Award recipients include Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams in 2014, Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley in 2015, and Colorado House Speaker Crisanta Duran in 2016.

“Nicole has fought tirelessly to hold the Missouri state government accountable,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List. “Her initiative to create an online record of the state’s daily spending and revenue has set a standard for state auditors across the country. Nicole is a dedicated public servant who prioritizes transparency for Missouri’s working families. For that, the EMILYs List community is proud to recognize her leadership and nominate her for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.”

As Missouri’s watchdog for government transparency and accountability, Nicole holds public officials accountable to citizens, uncovering millions in waste and fraud. She has shined a light on issues that impact families, including college affordability and cybersecurity in schools. The only Democratic statewide office holder serving in deep red Missouri, Nicole has led on family-friendly policies such as paid parental leave. Earlier this year she became Missouri’s first statewide office holder to have a baby while in office.

The Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award winner will be chosen with community input.

Nicole Galloway is nominated alongside:

  • Teresa Benitez-Thompson, Nevada Assembly Majority Leader
  • Coral Evans, Mayor of Flagstaff, Arizona
  • Lorena González, Seattle City Councilmember
  • Helen Gym, Philadelphia Councilwoman
  • Jennifer McClellan, Virginia State Senator
