Perdue Works for Compensation for Sterilization Victims

After decades of state-sanctioned sterilization, North Carolina Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue is demanding help for victims. Between 1929 and 1974, thousands of North Carolina’s citizens were sterilized, many being young women. “[T]he forced sterilization of all those women without their permission – it’s one of the most heinous things I have ever heard of… [I]t just makes my blood boil,” Perdue said. Her plan calls for the creation of the Justice for Sterilization Victims Foundation, which will identify, assist, and provide compensation to the sterilization survivors and their descendants. If elected, Perdue would be the first pro-choice Democratic woman governor of a southern state since the late Ann Richards of Texas.
