Update on Chris Matthews
Thousands of dedicated EMILY's List members responded to our call to contact MSNBC and demand that Chris Matthews apologize for his sexist remarks about Hillary Clinton and many other prominent women, including politicians, writers, activists -- and even his female colleagues on TV.
And because women and men across the country spoke out, Chris Matthews bent to the pressure and kicked off his show on Jan. 17 with an apology -- not just to Sen. Hillary Clinton -- but to all of his viewers.
Chris Matthews's apology is a step in the right direction and we welcome it. But it will be up to EMILY's List members like you to remain vigilant and keep an eye out for reporters and pundits who inject false and repugnant gender stereotypes into our democratic process.
Matthews's apology made waves in the news. The Washington Post reported, "Under pressure from feminist groups and his own bosses at MSNBC, Chris Matthews apologized yesterday for remarks about Hillary Clinton that he now admits sounded ‘nasty.'"
And he continued, "I will try to be clearer, smarter, more obviously in support of the right of women, of all people, to full equality of respect and ambition."
You can be assured, at EMILY's List, we will continue to hold Chris Matthews and all members of the media accountable for any gender stereotyping in their coverage.
