EMILY'S List Endorses Stephanie Herseth for South Dakota's Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. - EMILY's List, the largest financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its support for Stephanie Herseth in her bid for South Dakota's open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

EMILY's List will recommend Herseth to its nationwide network of members, opening the door to tens of thousands of donors eager to elect a Democratic woman to Congress who will fight for the issues they care about. Herseth grew up on her family's fourth generation farm and ranch in South Dakota and will focus on agriculture issues, in addition to the rising cost of health insurance, economic development and national security.

"Stephanie Herseth's experience and strong South Dakota roots will serve South Dakota well in Congress," said EMILY's List President Ellen R. Malcolm. "South Dakota has never sent a woman to the U.S. House and Stephanie has the talent and focus to fight for the issues affecting the state's working families."

Added Malcolm, "Stephanie has been on the ground running hard and building momentum since her last race. Our members are excited about this opportunity to send Stephanie to Congress."

EMILY's List, with its nearly 73,000 members, has a long history of electing Democratic women to office across the country who care about issues concerning women and families. EMILY's List supported Herseth in her strong campaign for this at-large seat in 2002.

In its 19-year history, EMILY's List has helped elect seven women governors, 11 women to the United States Senate and 55 women to the U.S. House of Representatives. In the 2002 elections, EMILY's List and its almost 73,000 members contributed nearly $9.7 million to Democratic women candidates; members contributed $23 million to fund EMILY's List operations and political program, including the nationwide WOMEN VOTE! project to mobilize women voters on behalf of Democrats.
