EMILY's List Endorses Gwen Moore for Wisconsin's 4th Congressional District
Washington, DC -- EMILY's List, the largest financial resource for women running for elected office, today announced its support for state Senator Gwendolynne Moore for Congress.
EMILY's List will recommend Moore to its national network of members, opening the doors to tens of thousands of donors eager to help elect Moore to the U.S. Congress.
Gwen Moore has proven her dedication to the people of Wisconsin. As a young single mother, she put herself through college and began her career working on behalf of her community, spearheading economic and community development projects as a VISTA volunteer and neighborhood activist. She has continued to advocate for the people of her community in the Wisconsin State Senate, where she has served since 1993. In the Senate, she has fought for prescription drug coverage, initiated the Wisconsin's Minority Health Program, and worked to create educational accountability standards for Wisconsin's schools.
"Wisconsin has a tremendous opportunity to elect a gifted leader in this open seat, and Gwen Moore is the strongest candidate in the field. Gwen knows how to make changes and create opportunities that benefit communities. She is a tireless fighter on behalf of Wisconsin," said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY's List. "EMILY's List is proud to help Gwen Moore on her way to victory."
Moore believes passionately that government can improve people's lives. "I know government can help people lift themselves up, because it helped me lift myself up," she says. In Congress, she will fight for those who are voiceless and make the federal government work for everyone in this extremely diverse district.
"I am proud and thrilled that EMILY's List is supporting my campaign at this critical stage," Moore said. "I've spent the last twelve years working to better the lives of the people I represent as a state senator. I am ready to continue this work in the U.S. Congress. The support of EMILY's List members will help me reach out to voters and to share my message and my record with them."
In its 19-year history, EMILY's List has helped elect seven women governors, 11 women to the United States Senate and 56 women to the U.S. House of Representatives and has over 85,000 members nationwide. In the 2002 elections, EMILY's List, which then had almost 73,000 members, contributed nearly $9.7 million to pro-choice Democratic women candidates; members contributed $23 million to fund EMILY's List operations and political program, including the nationwide WOMEN VOTE! project to mobilize women voters on behalf of Democrats.
