EMILY’s List Congratulates Karen Bass, the New Speaker of the California Assembly

Washington, D.C. -- Today, EMILY’s List is proud to celebrate another historic first for women in leadership and politics. This afternoon, Assemblywoman Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) was sworn in as the 67th Speaker of the California Assembly – the first African American woman to serve as Speaker of any state Assembly and the first Democratic woman to hold this prestigious role in California. EMILY’s List members were pleased to support Bass in her first race in 2004 through our Political Opportunity Program, as she began charting her path to leadership. As Speaker, Bass will work to address California’s budget shortfalls, improve the state’s foster care system, and collaborate with other members to make a stronger state Assembly. Today, our members congratulate her and look forward to her leadership and trademark style as she takes on this historic role.
