EMILY's List Endorses Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick in Michigan's 13th District

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY’s List, one of the nation’s largest political action committees and financial resources for women running for elected office, today announced its endorsement of Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick for re-election in Michigan’s 13th congressional district.

“Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick has shown time after time she has the knowledge, determination, and vision to accomplish great things for people in the 13th district and across Michigan,” said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY’s List. “EMILY’s List is proud to again endorse Congresswoman Kilpatrick as a leader and an inspiration to progressive Democratic women everywhere.”

Born and raised in Detroit, Congresswoman Kilpatrick spent 18 years in the Michigan State House and is currently in her sixth term in Congress serving the city and surrounding communities. Her vast experience is reflected in her appointment to the House Appropriations Committee, which authorizes spending for all levels of federal government. Additionally, Kilpatrick was unanimously elected chair of the Congressional Black Caucus for the 110th Congress.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick is dedicated to providing members of the 13th district with opportunities to own homes, grow businesses, and receive affordable health care. Her leadership in the Detroit “With Ownership, Wealth” (WOW) program helped more than 500 African American families become homeowners. She has fought to get more access for women and minorities to capital necessary to start and run businesses. And she introduced the Health Care Access Improvement Act, which would provide a tax break to primary care providers who are willing to locate in medically underserved areas.

“I am proud to have the backing of EMILY’s List as I serve the hardworking people in my district,” Congresswoman Kilpatrick said. “It is more critical than ever that Democrats stand together to create a strong economy for our workers, ensure all children have access to good education, and demand comprehensive health care for all Americans.”

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY’s List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to elect 71 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 23 years, EMILY’s List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
