EMILY's List Congratulates Donna Edwards on Special Election Win

The following is a statement from EMILY’s List President Ellen R. Malcolm on Donna Edwards’s victory in today’s general special election in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District.

“EMILY’s List is proud to celebrate another Donna Edwards victory in Maryland’s 4th District by officially sending this dedicated progressive to the 110th Congress. Throughout her primary race and this special election, Donna has illustrated the integrity and unmatched work ethic she will carry with her to Washington, D.C. In addition to championing women’s issues and providing a voice to the underrepresented, Donna will bring the number of women serving in Congress to a historical high. And as the first African American woman to serve in Maryland’s congressional delegation, she helps pave the way for a new generation of Democratic women leaders.”

Background

Edwards is the fourth EMILY’s List candidate to enter the 110th Congress so far this cycle due to special elections. She joins Congresswomen Laura Richardson and Jackie Speier of California and Niki Tsongas of Massachusetts.

EMILY’s List endorsed Edwards in November of last year and mobilized an aggressive campaign to help her win the heavily contested primary in Maryland’s 4th District. EMILY's List members from across the country contributed to her campaign and the EMILY's List WOMEN VOTE!® program independently played a critical role in educating and mobilizing women voters in the district.

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY’s List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY’s List has raised over $240 million to elect 71 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 23 years, EMILY’s List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
