EMILY's List Announces Endorsement of Joan Fitz-Gerald for Colorado 2nd District

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- EMILY's List, the nation's largest political action committee and financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its endorsement of Joan Fitz-Gerald in her bid for Colorado's second congressional district.

"Joan Fitz-Gerald is a strong voice for the people of Colorado. She has proven herself a leader time and again," said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY's List. "We are proud to support a candidate who has been such a trailblazer for women in Colorado politics. Her experience and dedication to her constituents will make her an excellent representative for the second district."

Joan Fitz-Gerald has broken barriers and accomplished firsts for women throughout her rise to leadership in Colorado. She was recently re-elected to her second term as president of the Colorado State Senate, a position which she was the first woman in Colorado's history to earn.

As president of the Colorado State Senate, Fitz-Gerald has earned the respect of her peers on both sides of the aisle and garnered bipartisan support for a successful referendum to ease Colorado's budget concerns.

In 2005, Fitz-Gerald was recognized nationally when she was elected as the first female chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC). Under her leadership, the DLCC achieved record fundraising numbers and Democratic legislative gains. As the wife and daughter of military veterans, Fitz-Gerald supports the efforts to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home safely. She is dedicated to achieving affordable health care for all Americans and hopes to bring to Washington the kind of changes she has been able to affect in Colorado.

"Every time EMILY's List endorses a candidate, I hear the sound of glass breaking—women breaking through barriers and uniting to serve our nation in elected office. They bring so much to the campaign in terms of advice and counsel." said Colorado Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald. "This means women across the country will have a chance to support my candidacy. I am truly honored."

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to elect 67 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 22 years, EMILY's List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
