EMILY's List Announces Endorsement of Debbie Halvorson in Illinois' 11th Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. — EMILY's List, the nation's largest political action committee and financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its endorsement of Debbie Halvorson in Illinois' 11th congressional district.

"Debbie Halvorson is a trailblazer with a history of getting results," said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY's List. "Over the course of her 11 years in the state Senate, her leadership has won her a wide base of passionate support among the people of Illinois. EMILY's List is confident that Debbie will continue this reputation as a hard working advocate of women, children, workers and the elderly in the United States House of Representatives."

The first female Senate Majority Leader for the state of Illinois, state Senator Debbie Halvorson has lived in the 40th Senate district her entire life. She worked as a small businesswoman for 14 years, serving as Crete Township Clerk from 1993 to 1996, and represented the 40th district for the past 11 years. During this time, she has made protecting seniors a priority, sponsoring legislation to ensure cheaper prescription drug prices, as well as better protection in nursing homes. She also sponsored legislation to crack down on hit and run drivers and to increase the penalties for sexually harassing minors via electronic communications.

During her time in the Senate, Halvorson has been the recipient of numerous awards, ranging from "Education Hero" by the Illinois Education Association, to "Business Advocate of the Year" by the Chicago Southland Development Inc, to "Star of the Year" from South Star Services, which honored her for her tireless advocacy and commitment to improve the lives of those with developmental disabilities.

"I am delighted to have earned the support of the thousands of EMILY's List members across the country," said Halvorson. "Over the years, I have worked tirelessly on issues ranging from empowering women in their health care decisions to advancing business and education, and always keeping the best interests of those I represent in mind. As Senate Majority leader, I have learned so much about leadership, and I am excited bring my skills, work ethic, and expertise to the United States House."

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to elect 69 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 22 years, EMILY's List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
