Statement from Ellen R. Malcolm on Jackie Speier’s Victory in California’s Twelfth Congressional District

“Today, the voters of California’s twelfth congressional district made history by electing Jackie Speier and adding another pro-choice Democratic woman to Congress. Jackie Speier marks a milestone for EMILY’s List: the 70th woman we have helped elect to the United States House of Representatives. California voters chose this tremendous leader because they know from day one – from this week forward – she will use her experience and tenacity to improve their communities and the country. As a California state senator, Speier has already proven her dedication to making the government work for the people, improving upon critical legislation affecting health care, privacy, consumer protection, child welfare, and education. In the state legislature, she honed her ability to cross party lines in order to pass needed legislation and will bring this much needed skill to the United States House. On behalf of the thousands of EMILY's List members, I applaud her on a resounding victory and express our great pride in helping her make history and a better future for the people of California.”

Background

EMILY's List endorsed Jackie Speier in February of this year. Adding to EMILY’s List victories already this cycle, Jackie Speier will be joining newly elected Congresswomen Laura Richardson and Niki Tsongas in the 110th Congress. EMILY's List members from across the country contributed to these campaigns as EMILY's List staff worked to develop and support the campaign’s strategy.

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to elect 70 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 23 years, EMILY's List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
