Statement from EMILY's List President Ellen R. Malcolm on Donna Edwards' victory in Maryland's 4th District

The following is a statement from EMILY’s List President Ellen R. Malcolm on Donna Edwards’ victory in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District:

“Tonight the voter’s of Maryland’s 4th Congressional District chose a true progressive champion to represent them in Congress. Donna Edwards fought the odds and entrenched corporate interests to secure her victory and a better future for the people of Maryland. She won because she put the people of her district at the forefront of her campaign and her agenda for Congress. In November, Donna Edwards will become the first African-American woman to serve in Maryland’s congressional delegation and EMILY’s List is proud to have played a role in her history making campaign.”

Media Background:

EMILY's List endorsed Donna Edwards in December of this year and began an aggressive campaign to help her win the heavily contested primary. EMILY’s List members from across the country contributed to her campaign and the EMILY's List WOMEN VOTE!® program independently played a critical role in educating and mobilizing women voters in the district. The EMILY's List WOMEN VOTE! program sent 190,000 pieces of mail reaching more than 80,000 Democratic voters throughout the district in the weeks leading up to this landmark primary.

With more than 100,000 members across the country, EMILY's List is the largest political action committee in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has raised over $240 million to elect 69 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 22 years, EMILY's List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.
