Betty Castor has a civic service record extending more than three decades. As a Florida state Senator, Castor helped pass historic education reform that introduced higher standards for students in Florida schools. In her first term as the state's education leader, Castor persuaded the legislature to spend more than $160 million of newfound state lottery money on schools to avoid education cuts. Castor also led the fight to increase teacher salaries and raise teaching standards.

In her tenure in public service, Farmer has demonstrated strong fiscal responsibility and solid knowledge of economic issues. As a state legislator, Farmer chaired the powerful Ways and Means Committee and served on both the Budget and Operations and Finance Committees. In the Legislature, Farmer led the effort to eliminate the state sales tax on groceries, one of the largest and fairest permanent tax cuts in Missouri's history. As Treasurer, Farmer is responsible for managing the state's $17 billion in annual revenues, overseeing the state's banking services, and managing the investment portfolio with nearly $3 billion invested daily. Under Farmer's watch, Missouri has maintained a AAA bond rating during tough economic times.
