About Jeanne Shaheen

A Second Chance

Shaheen narrowly lost to John Sununu in 2002, and Shaheen’s decision to challenge Sununu again instantly made him “the single most endangered Republican incumbent in the country,” according to the Washington Post. Shaheen's sound victory this year -- defeating Sununu 52 to 45 percent -- is key to the strengthening of our Senate majority.

A record of service

Shaheen will bring to the Senate a lifelong commitment to public education. “As a former governor, I know what states, schools, and families need most from the federal government,” she says. This includes repairing infrastructure, providing more support for early childhood education, and making higher education more affordable and accessible for middle-class families.

Changing Lives

As a three-term governor, Shaheen made dramatic improvements to education and health care, and used her position to protect reproductive rights. Helped by EMILY's List members in her closely-watched race, Shaheen brings her legislative and leadership experience to the Senate.

Shaheen unveils two health care bills

As part of the health care reform effort, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., introduced two bills Wednesday, which she said represent "commonsense solutions to costly problems that need to be addressed" to control the costs of health care.

"Treating people repeatedly in emergency rooms instead of coordinating less costly preventive care, and allowing brand name drug companies to purposefully delay consumer access to more affordable generic drugs are perfect examples of what is wrong with our nation's health care system."

Democratic women senators unite behind health care reform

At EMILY's List, we believe that electing women to office is critical for creating a more representative, progressive democracy. And with women at the table, our issues are a top priority.

This week, that couldn't have been clearer.

EMILY's List women of the Senate took center stage this week, speaking about the essential ways in which health care reform will benefit the country's women. From the House floor to Larry King Live, these women senators spoke out for women across America, describing the obstacles to care many women face.

Shaheen takes stand for jobless benefits

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen says that when the Senate returns to Capitol Hill today, she will continue her push to extend unemployment benefits to out-of-work residents of all 50 states.

The New Hampshire Democrat has taken a leading role in an effort to more fairly distribute extended unemployment benefits, saying the pain of being jobless knows no geographic boundaries.
