Markey heads to Capitol Hill

Less than two weeks after winning Colorado's 4th District seat, Democrat Betsy Markey is on Capitol Hill to learn the basics of being a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The freshman lawmaker, in town for a week of orientation, is learning about hiring staff, congressional ethics, member pay and benefits, and how to deal with the media.

Hagan goes to Washington with other freshmen legislators

Senator-elect Kay Hagan, D-N.C., joined other freshman legislators for orientation Monday on her first visit to Washington since knocking off Republican incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Dole. Hagan met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and planned to spend time looking for a place to live when her term begins in January.

New representatives hit The Hill

They haven’t been sworn in yet, but Reps.-elect Suzanne Kosmas and Bill Posey are already learning the ropes of Capitol Hill. The newly-elected congressmen, who will be representing Brevard County next year, have joined more than 50 other new House members for freshmen orientation. The session started early Monday morning outdoors, under blue skies, for a class photo on the steps of the Capitol.

Colorado tops percentage of women state legislators as gains inch forward

Colorado has the highest percentage of women serving as state legislators this year, barely edging out Vermont and New Hampshire, according to a Christian Science Monitor article published Sunday. Considering both the state House and Senate, 38 percent of Colorado’s lawmakers are women, ahead of Vermont’s 37.8 percent and New Hampshire’s 37.7 percent. In only one chamber in the nation -- the New Hampshire state Senate -- do women hold a majority of seats.
