WOMEN VOTE! Making History
Women voters have a huge influence on the outcome of elections. When they vote, Democrats win — because women voters tend to favor Democratic candidates. When they stay home, as they did in 1994, the radical right wins. It all comes down to voter turnout.
That’s why, in 1995, EMILY's List launched the national WOMEN VOTE! project — an initiative that integrates sophisticated research, advanced information technology, and old-fashioned grassroots organizing to turn out women voters for pro-choice Democratic women candidates and the entire Democratic ticket.
Women were key to victory for Democrats in 2006, and will be again in 2008.
“I hear the message of progressive politics in the clear voices of women voters. It is women who share the values and priorities of the Democratic party — and Democrats would do well to listen to them. EMILY's List will continue to listen — and we will continue to turn the gender gap into the votes that elect Democratic women and men up and down the ticket.”
– EMILY’s List President Ellen R. Malcolm
Women voted in high numbers in 2006, helping Democrats defeat the Bush Republicans and take back Congress. Women represent almost two-thirds of the base voters that Democrats need to be competitive. Typically, in the weeks leading up to election day, women make up a solid majority of late-deciding voters.
If we have the resources to reach these women with messages that motivate them, their votes can make the critical difference on election day!
EMILY's List is committed to turning out women voters — especially those who typically vote only in presidential elections. The EMILY’s List WOMEN VOTE!® strategy rests on three pillars: targeting, research, and voter communication.
Targeting. Through an exhaustive examination of voter rolls and polling data, EMILY's List identifies the best opportunities to mobilize previously non-voting groups of women, as well as women who are receptive to the Democratic message.
Research. EMILY's List uses the most sophisticated survey and market research techniques to identify key segments of the female electorate and develop the messages that resonate with them. EMILY’s List’s national Women's Monitor research, which tracks these trends, is an invaluable resource for the entire Democratic community.
Voter Communication. Using every available means — phone, mail, Internet, radio, television, and face-to-face campaigning — EMILY’s List reaches out to women voters to motivate them to support pro-choice Democratic women and Democrats up and down the ticket. In the weeks leading up to election day, EMILY's List conducts a massive grassroots effort to get out our vote — and deliver victory for our women and all Democratic candidates!
