A local business leader and job creator fighting to expand economic opportunity
Anita Malik is an experienced leader and job creator who is running for Congress to expand economic opportunity for Arizona families. Her parents immigrated to the United States from India, and when Anita was seven, her family settled in Arizona. Following in the footsteps of her father, a mechanical and computer engineer, Anita pursued degrees in computer information systems and finance from Arizona State University, where she graduated summa cum laude. She additionally received her master’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California. Anita went on to work for a technology company and for a local newspaper, later becoming deputy director of Arizona State University’s Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism. An entrepreneur, Anita founded a national publication focusing on pan Asian-American issues. Most recently, she worked as chief operating officer of a content technology company, helping develop effective digital media marketing strategies. Anita lives in Scottsdale with her husband, two sons, and two dogs.
A champion for Arizona working families
Anita is running for Congress to create good-paying jobs and expand economic opportunity for Arizona families. “As a tech executive and small business owner, I recognize that every issue is a jobs issue,” she has said. “I believe, without hesitation, that workers always deserve a seat at the table.” Anita also cares deeply about protecting families’ access to affordable, quality health care. Last year, her toddler son had nightly high fevers that doctors were unable to diagnose and eventually attributed to an unknown virus. “With test after test, there was no time to think about whether insurance would cover the cost,” she has said. “No parent should ever have to pause because of costs when their child needs care.” In Congress, Anita will fight to make sure affordability and access don’t stop parents from seeking health care for their children.
An opportunity to flip a seat and take back the House
Anita is challenging Republican David Schweikert, who is facing a wide-ranging ethics probe by the House Ethics Committee for allegations of misspending official funds and receiving illegal campaign contributions. Schweikert supports policies that would raise costs for people with cancer, diabetes, and pre-existing conditions, and has prioritized giving tax breaks to the ultra-rich at the expense of the middle class. Schweikert’s vulnerability makes this district a prime pickup opportunity for Democrats in 2018, and Anita has what it takes to flip it from red to blue. Let’s show Anita the full support of the EMILY’s List community to help elect this champion for Arizona working families to Congress — and let’s take back the House.
