A champion for Massachusetts working families
Ayanna Pressley is a proven leader who ran for Congress to continue her fight for Boston working families. She was raised by a single mother, an activist who “gave me my roots, my wings and my voice,” Ayanna has said. She worked as a senior aide for Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II and later Senator John Kerry, and went on to make history as the first woman of color ever elected to the Boston City Council in 2009. Ayanna made history again in 2011 by becoming the first person of color to top the ticket in Boston. She quickly earned a reputation as an outstanding public servant and a fierce advocate for Bostonians, and EMILY’s List honored her with the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award in 2015. Ayanna lives in Dorchester with her husband and young stepdaughter and their cat, Sojourner Truth.
An experienced leader fighting to expand economic opportunity
Ayanna ran for Congress to expand economic opportunity for all working families and to help raise wages and create good-paying jobs in Boston and Massachusetts. She knows firsthand what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet, and she will fiercely advocate for Bostonians. “I know what it is to belong to a workforce that often feels invisible,” said Ayanna, who was a hotel worker for several years. She is committed to fighting for all hardworking Bostonians to have the opportunity to thrive. As a city councilor, Ayanna founded the Committee on Women & Healthy Communities, which focuses on issues unique to girls and women and addresses community destabilization. She has worked tirelessly to help women and girls achieve self-sufficiency and equality, and she is a pro-choice champion. Ayanna is a survivor of sexual assault and a powerful advocate for all survivors of violence and abuse. Ayanna works tirelessly to give women and girls in Boston and across the country a strong new voice.
An historic victory
Massachusetts had never before elected an African American woman to Congress until Ayanna became the first with her historic victory. The EMILY’s List community is proud to support this champion for progress.
