An experienced leader fighting for Nevada working families
Chris Giunchigliani is an experienced leader and a tough fighter running for governor of Nevada to expand economic opportunity for all. An outstanding public servant, Chris has dedicated her career to giving all Nevadans a fair shot. Growing up as the oldest of six children, she learned the importance of hard work and education from her mother, who worked as a waitress, and her father, who worked as a draftsman and attended college at night to earn his degree in architecture. Inspired to become a teacher, Chris worked full-time to pay her way through college and earned a bachelor’s degree in special education. She moved to Las Vegas in pursuit of educational opportunity and earned her master’s degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In addition to her nearly three decades as an educator, Chris has served as president of the Clark County and Nevada State Education Associations and fought to strengthen public schools for all Nevada students. She stepped up to run for office for the first time and won in 1990, when she was elected to the state assembly in a tough race. Chris served as a legislator fighting for working families in eight regular and five special sessions, and served as speaker pro tempore. She continued her outstanding record of leadership when she was elected to the Clark County Commission in 2006, and now serves in her third term and holds the position of vice chair. Throughout her career, Chris has fought tirelessly for all Nevadans to have the opportunity to thrive. She lives in the same Las Vegas neighborhood where she and her late husband, Gary, made their home when they married thirty years ago, and she is proud to continue to serve their community and all of Nevada.
A champion for expanding economic opportunity
Chris is running for governor of Nevada to expand economic opportunity and to help create good-paying jobs across this diverse state. She has served as chair of the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, and will bring her decades of leadership experience to drive economic growth in all of Nevada. As a lifelong educator, Chris is the fighter that Silver State students and their families need. When elected, she will fight tirelessly for all students to have access to the educational opportunities they need to thrive, and as an experienced special education teacher, she will ensure that the most vulnerable students have access to the resources they need to get a fair shot. A pro-choice champion, Chris has served as trustee for the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. When elected, she will be a powerful advocate for expanding all Nevadans’ access to quality, affordable health care — and she will fight back as Republicans try to undo all the progress we’ve worked so hard to make. At a time when Republicans advance an agenda of hate and fear that hurts hardworking Nevada families, “we need comprehensive, moral, immigration reform now,” Chris has said. When elected, she will continue fighting to protect Nevadans from dangerous policies that threaten to tear families apart, harm communities, and damage the Silver State’s economy. A progressive champion, Chris is also a fierce defender of our environment. “We have to get serious about addressing climate change,” she has said, and she has fought for policies that promote sustainability throughout her career. Under her leadership, Nevada will expand economic opportunity and preserve its unique environment for future generations of residents and visitors to come.
An opportunity to flip the governorship in a critical swing state
Chris is running for an open governorship as incumbent Republican Governor Brian Sandoval faces term limits. She is an experienced and effective leader — and the only candidate to champion Nevada’s working families. In this state where Democrats hold both chambers – including the state Senate by a razor-thin margin – and Hillary Clinton narrowly outperformed Donald Trump in 2016, this race is a fight for Nevada’s future. Nevada has never before elected a woman governor, and with only two Democratic women governors in the country, this is an opportunity the EMILY’s List community can’t pass up. Women remain underrepresented in these powerful executive leadership positions, and as governor Chris will fight for all Nevadans as Donald Trump and his allies advance a dangerous agenda in Washington. This election is an opportunity to shift the balance of power in Nevada before the next congressional redistricting in 2021, when the Silver State’s governor will play a crucial role in the redistricting process — and if Chris is elected, she will be uniquely positioned to ensure that women and families’ voices will be heard in the halls of power. With so much at stake, the outcome of this election will have far-reaching effects in this swing state and beyond. Republicans will fight to hold on to this governorship with all they’ve got, so let’s show Chris the full support of the EMILY’s List community in this must-win fight for Nevada working families.
