A courageous leader dedicated to serving her country and community
Claire Russo is a courageous leader and a Marine Corps veteran running for Congress to fight for Virginia working families. Raised in Virginia, she joined the Marine Corps at 23 and served as an intelligence officer. She deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, where she led a team of Marines targeting insurgent networks. Claire is a survivor of sexual assault committed by a Marine aviator in 2004, and she took on the military bureaucracy to make sure her attacker was prosecuted and jailed. She went on to become a fierce advocate for women’s equality in the military and internationally and continued her service as a civilian with the Army. Claire deployed to Afghanistan and served as a counter insurgency adviser to the infantry and went on to serve on General Petraeus’s counter insurgency advisory team. Claire returned home and served as a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs fellow studying the role of women in combat and conflicts. She and her husband Josh, an Army Special Forces officer, are the proud parents of three young children and live in the community of Earlysville, Virginia.
A champion for Virginia working families
Claire is dedicated to expanding economic opportunity for hardworking Virginia families. “I’m running for Congress because I believe there are far too many political games being played in Washington and far too few people standing up for families like ours,” she has said. “As a Marine, my focus was getting the job done and I’ll bring that same focus to represent our community. That means ensuring quality affordable health care, protecting retirement for seniors, and working to make sure our kids have the same opportunities that we did.’” When elected, she will be a champion for Virginia working families in Congress.
An opportunity to flip a seat from red to blue
Claire is challenging Republican Denver Riggleman, a vulnerable freshman incumbent whose record of failure has hurt the working families he was elected to serve. We have the opportunity to help Claire flip this seat and strengthen our House majority in 2020. Riggleman and his deep-pocketed special interest allies will do everything they can to keep this seat, but Claire never backs down from a tough fight — and she has what it takes to turn this seat blue with our help. Let’s show Claire the full support of the EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for Virginia working families to Congress.
