A Dedicated Fighter for Justice and Equality
Hillary Scholten was born and raised in Michigan and is running for Congress to bring solutions back to her community. The daughter of a local reporter and an elementary school teacher, Hillary was inspired by her parents to give back to her community, to stand up and do something about injustices she saw around her, such as poverty and homelessness. She earned a degree in social work and became a case worker for members of the LGBTQ community who faced housing discrimination. Hillary then went to law school and clerked for the U.S Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit before working for the Department of Justice under President Obama. In 2017, appalled by the unjust policies of the new administration, she returned to Michigan and joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center as an attorney, and volunteered with the Times Up Legal Defense Fund, offering her legal expertise to those whom the system has left behind and ignored. Hillary and her husband live in Grand Rapids with their two young sons, in the same neighborhood where her grandparents grew up.
A Champion for Michigan’s Working Families
Hillary is running to expand economic opportunity for western Michigan working families. “We need a leader who is committed to putting forth commonsense solutions to the pressing problems facing Michigan, from affordable housing shortages to a national immigration crisis that is felt daily on a local level,” she has said. Hillary has worked extensively with immigrants navigating our country’s complex immigration system and knows firsthand how broken it is. “Throughout my life I have been advocating for people on the margins,” she has said. When elected, Hillary plans to prioritize expanding funding for public schools, protect access to affordable health care, and work toward commonsense solutions to prevent gun violence. “These are issues that matter to everyday people in our district,” she has said. “We need a leader who is prepared to go to Washington and bring solutions to the table.”
An Opportunity To Expand The Majority
Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District is currently represented by Congressman Justin Amash, a former Republican who left his party and will be running in 2020 as an Independent. Amash was one of the most well-known members of the extremely conservative Tea Party-affiliated House Freedom Caucus and is likely to split the Republican vote in the general election. This is a rare opportunity to pick up a seat from a vulnerable incumbent who no longer has the backing of his national party, in a district where President Trump barely received over 50% of the vote in 2016. Hillary is running a strong campaign and the EMILY’s List community is excited to be standing with this champion for western Michigan.
