A proven leader and dedicated public servant
Sara Gideon is a proven leader and dedicated public servant running for the U.S. Senate to expand economic opportunity for all Maine working families. She currently serves as speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. Sara grew up in a family of immigrants. Her father is a pediatrician who immigrated to America from India, and her mother is a second-generation American whose parents escaped the Armenian genocide. Sara graduated from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and went on to have a successful career as an advertising account executive for a nationally renowned newspaper. In 2012, she was elected to represent her community in the Maine House, and she is now serving her fourth term. Sara is serving her second term as speaker of the House, presiding over all actions of the House of Representatives. She lives in Freeport with her husband Ben and their three children.
A champion for Maine working families
Sara is a champion for Maine working families, and she has an outstanding record of achieving results. She has passed landmark legislation to help families gain financial independence, and under divided government she worked tirelessly to pass bills that that both lifted Maine families out of poverty and increased the number of higher-skilled workers to grow Maine’s economy. Sara is pro-choice champion and a fierce advocate for expanding access to quality health care for all Mainers. She is dedicated to promoting renewable energy sources and increased energy efficiency to build a clean energy economy and to protect Maine’s environment for generations to come. With Sara in the Senate, Maine working families will have a powerful new voice in Washington, D.C.
An opportunity to flip a U.S. Senate seat from red to blue
Sara is running against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, who has consistently voted to advance her party’s dangerous agenda at the expense of the Maine working families she was elected to serve. Collins has voted to defund Planned Parenthood, voted against strengthening equal pay protections and ensuring women are fairly compensated for their work, and cast a deciding vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court Justice. Deep-pocketed special interests rely on Collins’ vote in the Senate, and they are sure to spend heavily to keep her there. The EMILY’s List community has the power to help Sara fight back and win, and we are proud to stand alongside her. Maine has never before elected a Democratic woman to serve in the Senate, and Sara has what it takes to make history as the first. Let’s show this champion for Maine working families our full support to help her flip this seat from red to blue — and let’s take back the Senate.
