A lifelong Texan and an experienced community leader
Shannon Hutcheson is a lifelong Texan and an experienced community leader running for Congress to fight for Lone Star State working families. Shannon grew up in a working-class Texas family. Her parents divorced when she was six, and she helped care for her five younger siblings so that her mother could get an education to provide for the family as a public school teacher. Through work-study grants and scholarships, Shannon graduated from Austin College and went on to to the University of Texas School of Law. She began her legal career at a top-tier firm and worked her way up to be the most senior woman in its Austin trial department. Once Shannon had paid off her significant student loans, she started her own small, women-owned law firm with a longtime colleague and friend. She has taken on work for causes that are meaningful to her including reproductive justice, health care access, community safety, and advocating for survivors of abuse. Shannon has served on the board of the Austin Children’s Shelter, helping oversee its merger to form The SAFE Alliance, which serves survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, sex trafficking, and sexual assault. She also served on the board of SAFE and was a founding member of Women of Hope, an organization that raises money for SAFE. Shannon lives in Austin with her husband and their two young daughters.
A champion for Texas working families
Shannon is running for Congress to expand economic opportunity for all hardworking Texans. She knows firsthand how challenging it can be to make student loan payments, raise a family, and start a business. Shannon and her husband began their married lives with six figures student loans, and her personal experience is the foundation of her commitment to providing all children with a good education without crushing debt and to creating opportunities for all Texans to thrive. Health care is also a deeply personal issue for Shannon, whose daughter recently experienced a serious illness and underwent emergency surgery. The out-of-pocket costs were staggering even with insurance, and the experience intensified Shannon’s commitment to increasing access to high quality affordable health care. Shannon has done legal work for Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas for almost ten years. She has relied on Planned Parenthood for her own health care, and she recognizes the vital role that Planned Parenthood plays in providing trusted, preventive health care to thousands of Texans, helping them to lead healthy and productive lives. When elected, Shannon will fight tirelessly for policies that give all Texans a fair shot.
An opportunity to flip a seat from red to blue
Shannon is challenging Republican incumbent Congressman Mike McCaul, an extremist whose agenda hurts the hardworking Texans he was elected to serve. In 2018, McCaul won just 51.1% of the vote despite heavily outspending his opponent, and in 2020, we have the opportunity to help Shannon flip this seat and strengthen our House majority. This district has never before elected a woman to Congress, and Shannon is poised to make history as the first. McCaul and his deep-pocketed allies are sure to do everything they can to hold on to this seat, but she has what it takes to fight back and win. Let’s show Shannon the full support of the EMILY’s List community and help elect this champion for Texas working families to Congress.
