A champion for Minnesota working families
Tina Smith is a champion for Minnesota working families running for re-election to the United States Senate to continue fighting for economic opportunity and fairness. She came to Minnesota to begin a career in business after earning her MBA in 1984, and she has proudly called the North Star State home ever since. An experienced business leader, Tina started a small business that served state and national businesses and nonprofits. Raised in a family with a strong tradition of public service, she volunteered for campaigns and causes and has served as a vice president of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Tina has served as chief of staff to the mayor of Minneapolis, and after a devastating bridge collapse in 2007 she worked tirelessly to secure fast-track funding and rebuild in record time. Before being elected lieutenant governor of Minnesota in 2014, Tina served as chief of staff to Governor Dayton and managed the daily operation of Minnesota state government. She managed more than 35,000 employees and led a successful initiative to make the government work better for the Minnesotans it serves. As lieutenant governor of Minnesota, Tina fought tirelessly to expand economic opportunity for all Minnesotans. She led a multi-billion dollar public-private partnership to create tens of thousands of good paying Minnesota jobs over the next 20 years, and she has championed policies to support job growth across the state—including the expansion of rural broadband access. Tina was appointed to this seat because she was ready to lead from day one, and she won her 2018 special election to continue serving in the U.S. Senate. Tina lives in Minneapolis with her husband of more than 30 years, Archie, and they are the proud parents of two sons who also call Minnesota their home.
A fighter dedicated to expanding economic opportunity
Tina is an experienced business leader and public servant dedicated to expanding economic opportunity for all Minnesota working families and creating good paying jobs. She is a powerful advocate for expanding Minnesotans’ access to quality, affordable health care, and she fights back against Republicans’ desperate attempts to undo the progress we have worked so hard to make. As a longtime champion for Minnesota women, Tina fights tirelessly to defend every woman’s right to make her own decisions about her reproductive health care and to ensure that Planned Parenthood will continue to serve the Minnesotans who rely on it for critical services. Tina is dedicated to ensuring that future generations of Minnesota residents and visitors can enjoy the natural resources that make the Land of 10,000 Lakes a place where working families and businesses thrive.
A must-win fight to keep Minnesota blue
Tina successfully fought to hold this critical seat in her 2018 special election victory, and she is now up for re-election in 2020 to serve a full term. EMILY's List is proud to support Tina every step of the way. Deep-pocketed special interests are again eyeing this swing state seat as an opportunity for the GOP to gain ground, and we cannot take anything for granted in this state that Trump only lost by a razor-thin margin in 2016. With so much at stake in 2020, let’s show Tina the full support of the EMILY’s List community to keep this outstanding leader in the U.S. Senate fighting for Minnesota working families.
