Donald Trump Reportedly Allowing Any Employer to Seek Exemption to Birth Control Mandate

May 31, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning, reports surfaced that the Trump administration is planning to allow any employer to seek an exemption to the Affordable Care Act’s birth control mandate. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement.

“There he goes again. When it comes to attacking women’s basic rights, Donald Trump just can’t help himself. Women deserve the right to control when and how to start their families; not employers or Republican politicians.”

“We’ve always known that Donald Trump is obsessed with controlling women’s bodies. He famously bragged about being able to sexually assault women. Now, he wants to decide when women can have children. But when you’re a star – or when you’re president – you can’t just do anything. Actions have consequences.”

“Women are outraged, and this decision is bitter icing on the cake. They’re not going to shut up and stop fighting back. Trump and the Republicans who say nothing about this administration’s dangerous excess should be very concerned.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
