EMILY’s List Celebrates LGBTQ Pride Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today marks the beginning of LGBTQ Pride Month, a commemoration of the impact of LGBTQ people on our history. In recognition, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, released the following statement:

"As we recognize the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, this year’s Pride Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the hard-fought progress and activism of the LGBTQ community throughout history. However, the fight for full equality and fairness continues as the Trump-Pence Administration works tirelessly to undermine protections for LGBTQ people. Instead of standing up to Trump, his anti-equality buddies in the GOP have chosen to make repeated attempts to legalize discrimination and directly attack core American values. From striking down health care protections for LGBTQ patients, to implementing discriminatory restrictions against transgender people serving in the military, Republicans’ dangerous attacks on LGBTQ equality must be stopped.”

“EMILY's List is proud to support the LGBTQ community as we continue striving for diverse representation in elected office and at every decision-making table in the country. We were thrilled to elect several LGBTQ women last cycle, including leaders like Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, Sens. Tammy Baldwin (WI-SEN) and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-SEN); Congresswomen Angie Craig (MN-02), Sharice Davids (KS-03), and Katie Hill (CA-25); state Rep. Brianna Titone (CO-HD27), Del. Danica Roem (VA-HD13), and many more. As we continue our work to diversify the halls of power, we look forward to standing with these trailblazers as they fight for equality and the rights of all Americans.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILY’s List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 46,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
