EMILY’s List Endorses Anna Throne-Holst for Congress in New York’s First Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Anna Throne-Holst for Congress to represent New York’s First Congressional District. She is running against vulnerable freshman Rep. Lee Zeldin, whom EMILY’s List recently put “On Notice” for his anti-woman, anti-family record.

“Anna Throne-Holst is a committed public servant who is about getting things done for Long Island women and families,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List. “Her creative and thoughtful work to help children includes running a nonprofit child care center that serves lower income families, helping found an innovative school, and advocating for fair education funding. As Southampton Town supervisor, Anna dramatically overhauled the way Southampton spent money in order to refocus investments on the things that matter – job creation, education, public safety, senior services, and infrastructure – making sure Long Island families get a fair shot. The EMILY’s List community of over three million members is excited to support Anna Throne-Holst’s campaign to give Long Island working families a new voice in Congress.”

Anna Throne-Holst knows firsthand what Long Island families are up against—because she’s lived it. A resident of Long Island’s East End for more than 25 years, she understands the impact the community’s rising cost of living has had on hardworking families like her own. As both the former director of a child care center that served impoverished families and a single, working mother of four, Anna is running to ensure all families have a voice in Congress. When she was elected to the Southampton Town Council in 2007, Anna got to work, calling for an audit of the town’s finances and leading efforts to cut wasteful spending. Thanks to Anna, the town’s debt has now been reduced—and its bond rating upgraded to AAA. As the first Democratic-supported woman to serve in the role in 20 years, Anna made a real difference in the lives of Southampton’s working families and is running for Congress with a campaign focused on “respect for people who have to work for a living.”  Vulnerable freshman incumbent Lee Zeldin is a top target for Democratic takeover this cycle. His record when it comes to women and families—from supporting partially privatizing Social Security, to opposing raising the minimum wage, to cosponsoring an extreme abortion ban—is so dangerous it’s earned him a spot on the list of candidates EMILY’s List put “On Notice” for this cycle.

Anna Throne-Holst has made sure Southampton’s reinvested the money it’s saved through smarter spending on the things hardworking families actually care about like creating jobs, revitalizing Southampton’s downtown, and improving services for seniors. She believes  “a good politician should be an exhausted politician…someone who is out there working for everyone at every level.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $400 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making it one of the most successful political organizations ever. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research women's issues, and turn out women voters. We've trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect over 100 women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 11 governors, and over 700 to state and local office. Since its founding in 1985, almost one-third of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color - including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
