WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Aruna Miller for Congress in Maryland's 6th District. Emily Cain, executive director of EMILY’s List, released the following statement:
"Throughout her life, Aruna Miller has overcome obstacles, solved problems, and improved her community -- and EMILY's List is excited to see her do the same in Congress.
"From coming to this country as a seven-year-old and learning English so she could attend public schools to working in a fast food restaurant to help make ends meet during a family health crisis to becoming a successful engineer and running for state representative, Aruna has shown that there is no challenge she cannot rise to meet. She will be a strong voice for women and families in Maryland's 6th District, pushing back against Donald Trump and Paul Ryan as they attempt to end health care coverage for millions, defund Planned Parenthood, and roll back critical environmental protections. EMILY's List is excited about her candidacy and proud to endorse Aruna Miller."
As an engineer, Aruna is focused on identifying the toughest challenges facing Maryland’s working families — and fighting for the solutions that can have the greatest positive impact on their lives. She currently serves on the board of The Montgomery County Public Schools Educational Foundation; and in the legislature, she is a champion for strong public schools that prepare students for tomorrow’s economy. She has collaborated with academic and business leaders to invest in STEM education, help small businesses grow, and bring good paying jobs to Maryland. Aruna has fought to invest in infrastructure to increase Marylanders’ access to their communities and jobs, and to grow the state’s economy. She is an advocate for sustainability, and uses her STEM background to fight back against the dangerous anti-science agenda that threatens our environment and our future. She is committed to expanding all Americans’ access to quality health care, and fiercely defends every woman’s right to make her own choices about her reproductive health.
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILY’s List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
