EMILYs List Endorses Liuba Grechen Shirley in New York's 2nd District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Liuba Grechen Shirley for Congress in New York's 2nd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Liuba Grechen Shirley has already proven that she will not only take on tough fights on behalf of working families – she knows how to win them, too. Earlier this year, Liuba successfully petitioned the FEC to allow her use campaign funds to pay for her child care expenses — an important first step in leveling the playing field for moms like her who are running for Congress. This is consistent with the rest of Liuba’s career, where she has served as an advocate for women and families at home and abroad, and has fought to expand economic opportunity for all. She is the fighter that New Yorkers need in Congress speaking up when their voices have gone unheard.

“Liuba is running to face off against Republican incumbent Peter King, who has repeatedly voted against his constituents’ best interests. Liuba is the best candidate to flip this seat from red to blue and help Democrats take back the House in November. The EMILYs List community is proud to stand alongside Liuba and help her do what it takes to win this fight.”

As a fifth-generation Long Islander, Liuba Grechen Shirley has been deeply involved in activism in her community and abroad. Following the 2016 presidential election, she founded a grassroots organization to engage 2nd District residents on progressive political issues. She is a committed activist and has worked closely with private and public sector partners to expand economic opportunity for families around the world. Liuba lives in Long Island with her husband and two young kids.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
