EMILYs List Endorses Marie Newman in Illinois' 3rd District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Marie Newman for Congress in Illinois' 3rd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“With this Congress intent on ripping fundamental rights and autonomy away from women, it is critical that we elect leaders who stand with us. That is why we are endorsing Marie Newman for Congress. Throughout her career, Marie has worked to improve her community and advocate on behalf of children and families. Her record is unimpeachable. As a small businesswoman and nonprofit executive, Marie has shown that she will not back down from a challenge – a trait that will serve her well when fighting for the families of the 3rd District in Washington.

“The reality is that Dan Lipinski has not shown himself to be a leader that women and families can depend on. He has put women's reproductive health care in jeopardy and sought to end protections against discrimination. This is not an acceptable way to govern – and it's certainly not what the people of Illinois' 3rd District deserve. We support Marie Newman in this election and urge the voters in this district to join us. With Trump and Congressional Republicans working around the clock to take us backwards, we need an ally like Marie fighting for progress. It's time for change.”

Marie began her career working at the largest ad agency in the country and rose to become a partner at age 31. Driven to tackle new challenges and innovate, she left to start her own business and established herself as a successful entrepreneur. The mother of a child who experienced severe bullying in school, Marie founded Team Up to Stop Bullying, a coalition of 70 nonprofits, and authored a solutions-focused book to encourage anti-bullying policies and promote inclusion in schools across the country. After many years of volunteering on campaigns, she stepped up to run for the first time after the 2016 election because her community needs a champion who will courageously defend the fundamental rights so many Americans can no longer take for granted. Born and raised in the Chicago area, Marie and her husband, Jim, live in La Grange with their two children.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
