EMILY's List Endorses Rita Hart for Lieutenant Governor of Iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rita Hart for lieutenant governor of Iowa. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“From her family’s farm in Wheatland to her classroom and her seat in the state Senate, Senator Rita Hart has worked for decades to strengthen Iowa’s economy and improve public education for every family. She also understands firsthand the damage done to Iowa women and families by radical, anti-choice legislation. Voters finally have the chance to ensure Iowa is known for protecting access to health care and reproductive rights instead of passing the strictest abortion ban in the nation. EMILYs List is proud to endorse Rita Hart for lieutenant governor of Iowa.”

State Senator Rita Hart was first elected to the Iowa Legislature in 2012 and re-elected in 2014 to represent Senate District 49 which encompasses Clinton and Scott Counties. In addition to serving as an assistant minority leader in the Senate, she is a ranking member on the Agriculture and Natural Resources Budget Subcommittee and a member of the Agriculture, Appropriations, Education, and Natural Resources committees.

Prior to her service in the state legislature, Rita worked as a teacher for more than 20 years in the Calamus-Wheatland and Bennett school districts. She and her husband Paul have owned and operated a family farm since 1986 and together have five children.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
