EMILYs List Endorses Talley Sergent in West Virginia’s 2nd District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Talley Sergent for Congress in West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Talley Sergent’s commitment to protecting access to quality, affordable health care and fighting the opioid crisis is a guiding principle in her run for Congress. Having grown up in West Virginia and worked as an aide for a Democratic senator from the state, Talley has a deep understanding of the issues that West Virginia families face every day. When she served in the State Department, the same principles of service guided her on a global scale. Now, she is prepared to be the voice that West Virginians need standing up and fighting for them in Washington, D.C.

“Talley is running against incumbent Republican Alex Mooney, who has spent his time in Congress intent on ending health care access for millions of people. Mooney even supported a bill that would have caused over 120,000 West Virginians to lose health insurance coverage. Families in the 2nd District deserve so much better – they deserve a champion like Talley making sure their voices don’t go unheard in Congress. EMILYs List is proud to be standing alongside Talley as she builds the grassroots support to flip this seat.”

A native West Virginian, Talley Sergent is the third of six children and the daughter of public school teachers. After graduating college, she began working for U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia who was committed to maintaining access to health care for all West Virginians – a commitment that Talley will also adhere to in Congress. She went on to serve in the U.S. Department of State, where her work focused on empowering women and girls at home and abroad. Talley then joined the private sector before becoming the West Virginia state director for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2016. After the election, she started a small business in Charleston and works with nonprofit organizations to close the economic gap between states. In her free time, Talley enjoys exploring West Virginia’s natural beauty, spending time with her family, and running.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
