EMILYs List Endorses Tucson Women Leaders for Municipal Office

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Regina Romero for Tucson mayor and Lane Santa Cruz and Nikki Lee for election to the Tucson City Council. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Leadership at the local level often has the biggest impact on our day to day lives, which is why we’re thrilled to endorse Regina for mayor and Lane and Nikki for city council. With their commitment to Tucson and their empowering vision for the future, they are the champions Tucsonans need in City Hall. The choice could not be more clear for voters and EMILYs List is proud to stand with these amazing women leaders in their bids to serve women and families across Tucson.”

A current city council member, Regina Romero has represented the people of Ward 1 since 2007 when she became the first Latina elected to the Tucson City Council. During her time in office, Regina has championed a wide range of issues including environmental justice, equal pay for equal work, and citywide revitalization through her economic recovery plan to bring high-wage, long-term jobs to Tucson. Regina also led the effort to pass paid sick leave for Tucson working families and helped develop the city’s response to the ongoing climate crisis. She is a proud first-generation American and would be Tucson’s first Latina mayor if elected. Regina lives in Tucson with her husband Ruben and their two children.

Lane Santa Cruz is a community advocate, educator, and lifelong Tucsonan. For the past 12 years, she has worked in the non-profit and community organizing sectors championing migrant rights, food justice, and women’s equality. Once elected, Lane is committed to bringing lasting, positive change to the women and families of Ward 1 by supporting small businesses, investing in training programs for Tucson’s youth, and improving transportation and infrastructure across the city. She lives in Tucson with her partner and their four children.

Nikki Lee has an impressive record of service in the U.S. Air Force and nearly two decades of experience as an IT professional. With a passion for technology and a dedication to public service, Nikki is committed to empowering small businesses and entrepreneurs through programs that will create greater opportunity for all working families. Nikki lives in Tucson with her husband Antoan and their three children. She is running to represent the people of Ward 4.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 46,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
