EMILYs List Responds to President Trump’s Pick of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today President Donald Trump picked Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“Make no mistake – President Donald Trump’s pick of Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court is another move by this new administration that completely disregards women and families across this country. This choice comes as little surprise, given that President Trump, his administration, and an all-too-eager Republican Party have already prioritized rolling the clock back decades on human rights, civil rights, and equal rights – as well as endangering the progress we’ve made expanding access to health care, protecting our environment, and expanding opportunities for immigrants through programs like DACA.”

“In nominating Judge Gorsuch, whom Trump promised would work to repeal Roe v. Wade, Donald Trump has once again put women’s access to health care on the chopping block. Especially given the actions by Donald Trump’s administration in his first weeks in office, our country needs a Supreme Court justice who can be an independent check on this out-of-control administration. Americans depend on the Supreme Court now more than ever to defend their hard-fought constitutional rights – not to dismantle them.”

“Let me also be clear – this was President Obama’s seat to fill, and the Republican Party stole it. They obstructed Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination for months last year – refusing to even hold committee hearings on his nomination – despite the fact that Judge Garland was widely praised by GOP lawmakers until it was politically convenient to pretend otherwise. Americans will not be blind to Republicans’ hypocrisy on this matter.”

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
