EMILYs List Response to Republican Attacks on Kyrsten Sinema’s Childhood

WASHINGTON, D.C. – EMILYs List Vice President of Campaigns Lucinda Guinn released the following statement in response to national Republicans disparaging Kyrsten Sinema’s experience in homelessness as a child:

“Instead of letting the obstacles she faced in her childhood knock her down, Kyrsten Sinema rose up to pursue a career in public service and use her experience as motivation to help others. The facts are clear: Kyrsten faced tough times growing up and for a time she and her family were homeless. It’s shameful that she's being attacked and those who are disparaging her experience should apologize.

“I wish I was surprised to see these kinds of attacks against a woman with the grit and determination we need more of in public office. She was not the first, she will not be the last, and women are used to having to work twice as hard. Fortunately, we fight back even harder. We look forward to having her in the Senate to continue to be a steadfast advocate for Arizona’s hardworking families.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
