EMILYs List Statement on One Year of Texans Living in a Post-Roe Reality

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A year ago today, Texas’ extreme anti-abortion ban, S.B. 8, went into effect. This near-total ban, enforcable by private citizens awarded money for filing lawsuits, has deprived nearly seven million Texans of their fundmental right to abortion. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Today marks one year that Texans’ have been living without autonomy over their bodies and futures. But the implementation of this extreme abortion ban last year was only the beginning of Republican efforts to decimate abortion in the state. With anti-choice Republicans like Ken Paxton in office and the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Texans must now navigate three significant abortion bans that make critical health care inaccessible for millions. With these bans, doctors face felony charges and jail time, bounty systems pit neighbors against each other, and with an onus on the attorney general of the state to prosecute abortion related cases, Republicans are still not done.”

“Texans deserve more—they deserve an attorney general like Rochelle Garza who will take the fight for their reproductive freedom head on. They deserve to be represented in Congress and in their state government by Democratic pro-choice champions who will work to roll back these constant attacks on Texans’ rights. EMILYs List is ready to work hand in hand with the women we have endorsed to show Republican officials what happens when you mess with our rights: you are voted out.”

EMILYs List is proud to have endorsed the following pro-choice champions for election in Texas: Michelle Vallejo (TX-15) and Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) for Congress, Rochelle Garza for attorney general, and Maria Luisa “Lulu” Flores (HD-51) and state Reps. Mary Gonzalez (HD-75), Erin Zwiener (HD-45), Alma Allen (HD-131) for the Texas Legislature.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
