EMILYs List Women Help Deliver the Democratic Majority in the Virginia State Senate, Flipping at Least One Seat from Red to Blue

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As races continue to be called in favor of pro-choice Democratic women across Virginia, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced one EMILYs List-endorsed candidate flipped her seat from red to blue in Virginia’s state Senate, helping deliver the Democratic majority. EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:

“Votes remain to be counted, but it’s clear that pro-choice Democratic women in Virginia are leading the sea change for Democrats. So far, EMILYs List-endorsed women have flipped at least one seat in the state Senate from red to blue. Women have been leading the fight for Virginia’s hardworking families and we’ve known their victories would be key to a Democratic majority in the state. We can’t wait to have their much needed voices in the state Senate.”

Ghazala Hashmi flipped Senate District 10 from red to blue. Two additional red-to-blue flip races with EMILYs List candidates running for the state Senate have not been called.

EMILYs List is also celebrating the victories of the following women in the state Senate: Mamie Locke (SD-02), Jennifer McClellan (SD-09), L. Louise Lucas (SD-18), Barbara Favola (SD-31), Janet Howell (SD-32), and Jennifer Boysko (SD-33).

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
