GOP (Nearly) Passes Tax Scam: EMILY’s List Responds

December 20, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This morning, Senate Republicans passed the GOP tax bill. It will now be returned to the U.S House of Representatives, whose members, because of Speaker Paul Ryan's legislative errors, now have to vote a second time to pass this historically unpopular bill. It will then go to Donald Trump's desk, where he is expected to sign it into law. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, released the following statement:

"By supporting this dangerous bill, Donald Trump and the Republican Party have sold out working families to line the pockets of the ultra-rich and create a windfall for big corporations — a transparent ploy for campaign dollars. Meanwhile, many middle-class families will face tax increases and higher health care premiums. Millions will lose access to health care. Americans know a scam when they see one — which is why together, we're going to work to replace each and every politician who voted for this bill with Democratic women in 2018, 2020, and beyond."

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILY’s List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
