Today Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos testified on Donald Trump’s education budget in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, released the following statement:
“The education cuts presented in Donald Trump’s budget are simply indefensible. One of our most sacred duties as a nation is to invest in our children and prepare them for the future, and it is outrageous that this administration keeps on taking from those who need it the most, while giving away tax cuts to the wealthiest. Instead of focusing on how to improve our schools for all children, Trump and his Republican allies are focused on cutting funds from low-income students, child care services, and special education in order to fund the privatization of our schools. EMILY’s List and our five million members are committed to protecting our schools, and ensuring that families and young people get access to the education they deserve.”
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
